Email marketing
The one channel nobody can take away from you.
What it is
One of the 19 traction channels. S3 Stripe lists owned channels, meaning your site, your email list and your CRM, as the first mitigation against platform risk. S22
When it works
Whenever you have a list. Its value is less as an acquisition channel than as insurance: every other route to your users runs through a platform that can ban an account, change an algorithm, or raise fees without notice. S22 The synthesis in the research is that every platform channel should be feeding an owned one. S22
What it needs from the product
An email capture form outside the login flow. That is the whole structural requirement.
How it decays
Chen reports email open rates under 30% and clickthrough under 5% among the mature channels. S25 It decays like everything else, but you keep the list.
What the report checks
The structure gate looks for an input of type email that is not inside a login, signup or password form. If the homepage could not be read, the report says could not check. If it read the page and found none, the report raises a No owned channel risk flag.
