Engineering as marketing
Build a free tool people already search for. The best channel for someone who can code.
What it is
One of the 19 traction channels: free tools, calculators and micro-apps used as an acquisition surface. S3 S12 Documented examples include HubSpot’s Website Grader, launched in 2008 and still drawing around 65,000 visits a month, Shopify’s business name generator, Remove.bg, and Ahrefs’ free keyword generator, which requires no signup. S12
When it works
When you solve one specific problem the audience already searches for, minimise friction with no mandatory signup, and make the tool demonstrate the value of the paid product. S12 It is a loop rather than a funnel: the tool earns links, links earn rankings, rankings bring users, some of whom link to the tool. S7 S12
What it needs from the product
Engineering time, which a builder has, rather than spend, which a builder does not. There is no prerequisite on the site because you build the surface.
How it decays
Returns compound slowly through backlinks and rankings, so it is slow to start. S12 Once it works, it is subject to the same search intermediation as everything else. S23
What the report checks
No gate can fail. It is the highest-weighted channel in the report for a solo operator because it converts the hours you have into the distribution you do not.
