The 19 channels

Search engine optimisation

Being found in search because your site has pages worth finding.

What it is

Ranking in organic search, one of the 19 traction channels. S3 Content is one of Hockenmaier and Rachitsky’s three lanes: it fits when users generate public content as a by-product of use, or when you hold enough unique data to generate genuinely rich pages. S6

When it works

When the product emits indexable pages as a by-product of use. Balfour: products are built to fit with channels, channels do not mould to products. If you want SEO, the product has to generate indexable pages. S4 Programmatic SEO needs a substantial, reliable data source and content that is genuinely relevant, not thin pages. S13 Janz calls inbound the closest thing to a silver bullet for products at the thousand-dollars-a-year tier. S5

What it needs from the product

Pages. Either a real publishing surface or a repeating URL shape that a stranger can land on. Zapier’s warning is that the more pages you have, the more pages you have to maintain. S13

How it decays

SEO is 25-plus years old as a channel and Chen finds it degraded. S25 Search itself is being intermediated: instead of ten blue links you are competing to be among the two to seven domains an AI answer cites. S23 Per the Law of Shitty Clickthroughs, a reset like that is also when a channel is worth entering. S21

What the report checks

The structure gate looks for a repeating path pattern in your sitemap, a blog or docs route, or a sitemap of sixty or more URLs. If it cannot read those, the channel goes to Could not check rather than being marked closed.
